This just fires me up...

Yesterday we were flying back from a trip checking out a couple of our manufacturers. I saw a local board shop and decided to stop on in. There was this Dad and his son (probably around 14 or 15 yrs old). They were asking for advice and looking for gear since the son was a newbie and only gone once.

The sales man (in this case dumba$$) told them that classes were waste of time and that he'll learn just as quickly by himself. Then he proceeds to tell them that the Burton Custom X is the board he wants as "it's a sick board that is easy to ride and will progress quickly". WTF??? I hate when people try to rip off others. When he left to talk to another customer I told the Dad and son to run as they're getting taken. I ended up talking to them for close to 45 minutes in the parking lot and gave them the advice I thought would really help (in gist take a class and no need to buy a freakin' $700 board).

Hopefully that kid's future boarding experience will now be fun and parents' wallets a little fatter.

...OK rant done

Yeah, well the sales guys are just trying to make some extra money.

Too bad they don't understand that the customer will come back if they are honest.

Naturally!

MG8701 -
Haha...yeah I could see that (hell I would be...lol). But he clearly had no idea behind snowboarding and was truly new. Besides if his Dad did buy him a custom x then I'm sure it'll be used only once then thrown in the closet because that board would do him every which way wrong on the bunny slopes.

Nick -
Thanks

*Update*

Hey the Dad of that son emailed me today! I always love hearing from enthusiasts and customers and this one just made everything that much more worthwhile. Not to bore anyone, but thought I'd share...it made my week.

PS> Not only did we send his son some decals we also sent him a shirt! Hopefully he becomes a life long boarder! I love this stuff! Oh and yes...I told them to check out Sierra!

"Hi Eric -
I really wanted to say thank you for taking the time to talk to my son Josh and I yesterday (and really saving us from making a big mistake). You looked like you needed to go but ended up staying with us for nearly an hour (and again we certainly appreciated that). Believe me when I say we'll never go back to that store! Your business acumen and honesty was a pleasure to see. I'm glad you gave us your card so I have your email. We ended up going to another store and they were really helpful. We ended up buying the right gear for him (thanks for the tip of looking at '09 models for price breaks). Your advice certainly helped us and allowed us to ask the right questions. Josh is looking forward to taking a class with his new board. Again, just wanted to say thanks and it's people and companies like you that add to the pleasure of seeing a smile on my kid's face.

If you have any, I would appreciate any stickers for his board. Wicked Adrenaline all the way. We're now your biggest fans.

Best Regards,
Tim

That's a good question (I've never been in a situation like that). I would most likely have been more tactful with a question to the sales guy as opposed to an outright "WTF are you talking about and why are you taking them to the cleaners"

I personally don't think classes are necessary.

I personally don't think you are right........
When any of my friends that want to learn I make them (at minimum) take a Morning lesson for the first 3-4 times,  two reasons:
1) people who teach for a living are better at teaching than me.
2) I can go hit the good spots/snow in the AM while they are in lessons and in the afternoon I don't mind messing around and following them down green runs.

Its pretty funny that one of my friends were kind of pissed off that I would not teach them but now that he rides all the time he make ppl take lessons too.

I feel like people get frustrated quicker if they are learning from a friend. You also don't have the learner embarrassment factor to deal with if they go through actual lessons.

+ 1 on getting to hit runs while they are in lessons and riding slower with them in the afternoon.
Bring it hard or don't bring it at all.

Thanks all!

+2 for riding in the morning while friends are in classes. I too always encourage all my new rider friends to take a class. I spend the 3-4 hours rocking it on the mountain then the rest of the afternoon wherever they're most comfortable riding after their class (it doesn't bother me one bit riding slower and on the easy greens for the afternoon with them).

Yeah I never took classes when I started. I regret it, because it took me longer to learn how to carve and stuff then it could have.

I've worked with these kids before.  Pisses me off too.  Give the customer what he or she needs, not what boosts your commission.  Works out better for the industry in the end since they're more likely to be stoked on the sport.
ROLL ON, BISHES.
