What would YOU do if someone broke into your house

I use to slang Chronic. And someone did break into my house and jack my stuff, Luckily I found out who it was.

I beat his legs in with a metal bat, and kneed his teeth out of his mouth.

about 20 years ago my grandpa came home to his hows to find someone broke in through the front door (he came in the back)

the house is a split entry and the guy was just walking up the stairs as my grandpa came to the banister at the top of the stairs, my grandpa jumped over the railing and landed on top of the burglar and arrested him there (he was the chief of police at the time)

About three years ago my grandfather was in the hospital and my grandmother was going to visit him every day at the same time.  This went on for weeks and weeks.  Someone must have been watching the house as they knew exactly what time she was going to be out.  Well, one day, grams went out at her usual time, only this time she realized she forgot some things he had asked for.  She went home, found two kids in her house.  One ran as soon as he saw her, didn't have anything in his hands.  The other was trying to escape with all of her jewelry and money in a bag under his shirt.  When she realized he had something, she ripped the bag out from under his arms and he ran away.  She chased him down the street.

I live in a house owned by our church. I was in the bathroom one day when I heard voices through my vent. I knew the tv was off so I grabbed my Sig 9 and creeped into the living room where a couple of guys were standing next to the window. Turns out it was some of my church members were putting up new blinds. I was slightly embarrassed when the two 60 something guys told me to "put that thing up and grab that drill."

Wait a sec... some idiot could potentially use the info on this thread and burglarize someone's place.

My friends got robbed when they weren't home. The robbers stole all their guns, and the safe they were in.

They later found out the guy who did it was a friend of one of their brothers who went shooting with them the week before. They discovered it because one of the really nice hand guns (along with most of the game equipment they stole) showed up at a pawn store. The pawn shop had to get the guys name before they would buy it. Ends up the ONLY reason they were robbed were for the weapons, although the guy took thousands of dollars worth of electronics as well. If they didn't have the guns, the guy would have never robbed them.
My friends only had the serial numbers to the guns, not the electronics, so they were only able to recover the one hand gun they guy sold to the pawn store.

I'm not saying what I would do, because if someone broke into my house, I don't want there to be anything written about my plans for him.

Oregon has castle doctrine, but I think most people don't realize what happens if you actually shoot someone, even in self defense.

First, you need to kill them.  If you just wound them, they are going to sue you and the legal bill will easilly run $500,000.  There are lawyers that literally hit up every single person who gets shot since police reports have to be filed.  If a guy is breaking into your house, odds are pretty good he doesn't care anyway.

Second, if you do kill them, their family will sue you, and the legal bill will run $500,000.  And if you lose, it will probably be ten times that in a monetary judgement against you.

The NRA sometimes takes these cases on for you, but the waitlist is a few hundred people deep.

Very likely no criminal charges will ever be filed against you, but criminal court and civil court are two different things.

Yea, in CA - when you take your HSC (Handgun Safety Certificate) - in the study materials, they flat out tell you if you shoot someone, you WILL end up in court one way or another. If not criminal, then the family will sue. Interesting that the state comes out and tells you right up front this is going to happen.
Also - because of the laws in CA - if you do pull the trigger, if you only wound the person - you will find yourself in criminal court. Some state attorney somewhere will make the argument that because lethal force was not needed to stop the attack, then clearly the threat did not rise to the level of using a gun. That's a violation of 'duty to retreat' - and you'll find yourself in some hot water. Because it's a weapons violation, you will lose all your guns, never get them back, and will no longer pass the NCIS needed to buy another one - ever again.

And same thing about court.  They all said you will end up in court one way or the other.  Basically it came down too ''If you are going to die, then its better to end up in court.  If not, don't shoot.''

yea - the craziest thing about all this in CA - is if the same situation came up. Let's say i was sitting here eating dinner and some guy came in my house. If i'm not using a gun - i have no duty to retreat. I could take  my steak knife and jam it in his neck and it wouldn't be a criminal issue at all. In fact the state would probably come to my defense and say I had a right to defend myself from a violent attacker, and that clearly the intruder meant to do me harm, as evidenced by the fact he kicked my door down.

If you use a gun however, you're an evil evil person.

i probably would do something really retarded and get myself hurt by running into a wall... My neighbors ran out of there house when someone tried to rob shit in there house a week ago.
