Hello I'm looking to buy a board for my boyfriend. Its gonna be a super big suprise or I'd let him pick it out. Anyway he's about 5''7 and weighs 160lbs. His boots are a size 9.5... whats a good brand to be looking for? What size should I be buying? Thanks

Well, what kinda of riding does he do? cause that would impact the sizing, but there is no better brand, most brand are all pretty good, some choices are Capita, Nitro, Rome, Burton, Gnu.

Hey Whitehorse, what kind of board is your guy riding at the minute? That'll probably give us a good starting point to recommend something. Does he ride park a ,lot or mainly groomers or is he hiking for powder all the time, the more info we know the better we'll be able to recommend something.
Also what does he like/dislike about his current board (again that'll help us to determine what might be good for him) One last point is what make bindings does he have, there's several different systems out there and we want to make sure that the board you get him works with the binding system he's using – unless you're going to get new bindings as well. |

Wow this is certainly a difficult thread to make any meaningful suggestions. I think you're intentions are awesome and feel free to speak to my wife anytime (haha). However to make a worthwhile purchase there's a good amount of info you would need. For example:
1) How new or advanced is he 2) How often does he go? 3) When he rides, does he just cruise or stay in the parks or a mix of both 4) Height/Weight 5) Is he more into speed or technical freestyle 6) Does he ride mostly pow or groomed As you can see the list above is only a sample of the difficult questions that are out there. The more you know the more we'll be able to help and offer better suggestions. Star25 definitely had a great suggestion on getting a gift cert. That may be your perfect solution. He'll be just as surprised and happy. Best of luck! - Eric @ WA |

Ok lets see how many questions I can answer about his current gear
1. He has burton bindings. Probably 2007 or 2008. They're yellow. 2. He is riding a sims board. I've never heard of that brand. (he bought all his gear second hand) 3. He pretty much does tricks and cruises so all terrain? not sure 4. height: 5"7 Weight: 165lbs I would get him a gift certificate but I want to buy this for him it'll be a better surprise. Any suggestions.. I'm looking at the 2009 burton primo???? |

**How much are you willing to spend?
How long has he been ridding? Is he really good/average/improving? What length is his board right now? (it will be stamped somewhere on the board if you get a chance to look at it. ~ If you can't find the length of the board, how tall is the board compared to him? Is it at his shoulders, chin, nose, forehead...? Because we know he is 5'7'' this will at least give us a better idea of what size he likes to ride.) |

Big Air. Kids today, that's all they want, big air. I say stick to the mountain. That's where the fun is. You want big air kid? Pull my finger.

Shot a private message your way.
Honestly most anything will probably be an upgrade over the Sims. If you don't know the specific kind of riding he does, I'd look for a mid-stiff board around a 156-ish. Hard to say specifically without knowing what your boyfriend likes, but it'll be an upgrade over a old second-hander. Sierra doesn't have a whole lot available in that size range, though. Depends on your price range, really. The Rome Slash 156 looks promising.

Good suggestion. The Rome Agent might also be a good choice. Plenty of Ride boards to choose from as well.... just so hard to help select with so little/vague information. |

this is just consideration
board size range in 153-156 type - all mountain freestyle ( each brand has boards that are made for certain type of riding intended ) this doesn't mean you cant use for other type of riding flex - mid flex 4-6 stiffer side towards shorter board, softer on longer board ( usually all boards have flex meter ) camber - rocker, well this is totally up to you |

if hes in second hand gear hes probably not been riding that long. Anything you give him will be a step up. Get him anything in the midrange price (about 200 - 400 bucks and (to quote the simpsons), he'll pretty much have to :) You can find some nice sale stuff too on sierra, though if youre really wanting to impress the hell out of him, dont go further back than last season :) Also, rocker is this years hype must have, look in the sales i think theres a few things there.
If hes only been riding a year or so, you can pretty much grab any recommended board and hell love you. If hes been riding a few years though, he'll be starting to have a preference. My advice though, for what its worth (and its pretty worthless im only at season 3), is DONT go for an all mountain board. Get him a park board. if you can find it, ive seen the bataleon evil twin from 2008/9 at bargain prices (and bataleon is nice, so you can even go back to 2007/8 and still have pretty much the same ride saving you around 200 bucks). If he really likes to snowboard, at some point he will DEFINITELY be grabbing a park board. So get it now! :) And park is really where the fun is anyway (unless hes in his thirties and inexperienced, in which case he'll probably resent it - but still think in the back of his mind that if he only had a bit of a noodlier board hed MURDER the park! I know i do :)). If you get him a rocker board (reverse camber, FK, BTX, banana etc etc - also TBT from bataleon)) he'll really think youve researched as well :) If you got about 300 dollars to drop though, I honestly cant believe anyone would be upset at being given a sierrascope in truth, dont forget to throw in the secret coupon code (search "sierrascope coupon" on google). A STEAL!!! :) If you were willing to drop that kind of cash, its your first choice. Its park, but allegedly stiff enough in the middle to make it more all mountain. If you want to go a bit cheaper just have a look in the sales. Youre honestly spoiled for choice :) My advice then. If its below 200, go for a strict park board. Try and grab last seasons horrorscope or last seasons bataleon evil twin (love the acid graphic!) If you want to amaze him, get a sierrascope though. Its one of those things that looks (and ive been assured, rides) way more expensive than it actually costs. Unless he knows sierra, he'll think you spent a freaking fortune! :) |
