he plays for portugal and up until this season, he played for the scum, i mean Manchester United. As of this upcoming season, he will be playing for Real Madrid, so expect to see a huge decrease in american support for manchester united, and a huge increase in american support for real madrid. |

See, these two videos sum up why I can't stand watching soccer. I don't think I've gone through a whole game without seeing some pusy azz player faking an injury for a ref call. Why can't they just play the game without trying to suck off the ref? In real football, people don't fake injuries. |

^^ Exactly. Why watch 45 minutes of nonstop play when you can watch football and see guys run into each other for 6 seconds and then stand around for another 40??
Paying attention for 45 minutes straight is too demanding for simple-minded football fans.
Right. I've never seen a QB dive or embellish contact hoping to draw a flag. Never. Not once. |

While QBs sometimes do that (and it is low), that's waaaay different from almost getting touched, diving, and then holding your face for ten minutes. Have you ever seen a QB lay on the ground grabbing any part of his body if he wasn't actually hurt? I think not. In fact, have you ever seen a QB fake contact? I've never seen a QB recieve no contact, yet fall anyways. Further more, QBs embellishing contact happens so rarely (and I say this, from watching football every saturday and sunday, every season, since I was 6), while in soccer, it has happened in every game I have ever watched. |

I don't know what soccer games you're watching, but I rarely see a soccer player go down with no contact (seems easy to lambast soccer and diving after watching a video highlighing 10 dives compiled over multiple seasons from multiple leagues). I see soccer players embellish contact...Just like people see QBs embellish contact. But because QBs embellish less than soccer players (QBs also play 1/4 games soccer players play in a given season), football is exponentially better? Yes. I agree. Good logic. High five.

Pure brillianceÂ
. Football players can't think past one play on their own. Everybody has to run a specific route, and you're incredibly talented, you get to run an 'option' lol. Keep in mind these plays are chosen by the qb, who has a radio in his helmet to the OC in the booth, who takes cues from the HC on the ground, all by radio lol. Pathetic. |

In American football if you can play offence and defense your a superstar if you do it in soccer your a midfielder!
Not fair to comapre Football with soccer, it would be better to compare it to...Rugby...Rugby League to be more specific! Now that IS a mans game. Those diving complilations are over the past few years and they've got 10, it doesnt happen that much and those examples are exagerated. Fans wont put up with it, its an embarrassment for the player. At a reputation you dont want, or comes back to hurt you later on in another game - the boy who cired wolf! |

This debate should really just stop, its apples and brussel sprouts. (with football being apples, and soccer being brussel sprouts because I like apples and football )Gifted, while that maybe true for Highschool football, maybe even some college, its pretty far from true for the pros. What the coach calls from the sideline is a package. From that package there are a few different plays that can be run. Which play is run depends on how the defense lines up and the read thats made. Not to mention the coach may call anything from a playbook thats about six inches thick, thats a lot of plays, and you'd better damn well know whatever the coach calls and how to make the proper read so that you are on the same page with the rest of the team. Soccer on the otherhand is pretty much a game of just being in the right area of the field and improvising, "get it in the zone then try and get it to the middle so someone can take shot," I'm just saying that to show that anyone can make a gross over-simplification of any sport Plain simple truth; both sports require a tremendous level athleticism and intellect regarding the sport. Neither is really "better" one is just more fun to watch(football ) |

You're in good timing! There's a bunch of play coming up soon. The English Premier League, and La Liga, the Spanish League both start next month. Also, World Cup qualifiers will be starting in September, and then World Cup will start next summer. Fox Soccer channel will be showing English League, Spanish League, as well as Italian league football (called Serie A)this season, and ESPN will be carrying some of those games as well, as well as the UEFA championship games. (The UEFA championship league is when they take the best club teams from each country to form a league of the best of the best).Â
Can't tell you which team to be fan of, but i can say, that since Manchester United is the literal definition of glory hunter, dont be like most americans and choose them lol.

Fair enough, maybe I have been rather unlucky in the games I have watched, but I'll take your words for it, considering I probably won't watch more than three soccer games for the rest of my life. Oh, and could you please quote where I said American Football is better than Soccer? I never once said that, nor ever will. If anything, I said that American Football is a lot more physically demanding in terms of physical contact. It takes great skill to play both sports, and it's just a matter of who you grew up with, and preference, that decides which one you like better. Don't put words in my mouth, you're not cool for it, nobody will give you kudos. |

I hate to admit it and I'm pretty wary of youtube highlights reels of players but this lad that Fergie has signed actually looks pretty handy.Signed from Solskjaer's old club Molde, he'll go back on loan there until January. Hopefully he'll be another Manucho. |

I find this bizarre – let's be frank here, there's no difference between an American (or any other non English guy/girl) supporting Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea/Liverpool you're all glory hunters, you chose your team because they were winning stuff/doing well. Whilst Man Utd might be seen as the most derided fans in other countries, I can guarantee that doesn't hold true to real supporters ie. those who actually attend matches rather than just talk about being fans. Favourite question to Arsenal fans "who was your manager before Wenger?" cue lots of blank looks before a failed guess of "George Graham?" Arsenal fans are the epitome of rich, new age age, no nothing about the game, believ football was inveted in 1996, fickle 'supporters on the planet. Not for nothing was their old ground nicknamed the 'Library' it was that quiet. Witness the scenes in the Champions League semi final, 2-0 down so do Arsenal 'fans': 1. Support their team or 2. Leave the ground? Yes that's right half the 'fans' just upped and left, utter disgrace – imagine what they'll be like if they don't win anything this year, all their 'loyal' fans will have gone 4 years without winning anything, they'll be suicidal!!!!! or they'll just go back to supporting whoever is winning stuff again ![]() I've been going to 10+ matches per season for well over 2 decades now and despite widespread belief globally, Man Utd fans are pretty good, but by fans I mean people who go to matches. I've no great love of Man Utd but there's a lot less knowledgable, bandwagon jumping, don't make any noise fans out there that are a lot worse Gifted – sorry this isn't a pop at you, but basically (with the exception of the 2 Leeds lads) this thread has been very strange reading but hey everyone's entitled to their views. Screw the Premier League it's all, about the Championship ![]() |

Screw the Championship! Its all about League One! Until next year!!!! Do a Soccer AM style draw where you put all 92 league teams names in a hat and pick ONE! Then just look out for there results and highlights, its more fun when you've ups and downs and in the lower leagues your team can go from doing nothing last season to challenging for the playoffs or the other way battleting against relegation. Supoort LEEDS! Never a dull moment! Massive club with history, we still get on TV, great young squad going for the league this year, 4 years we'll be back in the Premier League! Getting back to on topic Cannot beleive Adebeyour (sp) siging for Man City, money grabbibg b*****d!

well
made points Phil, but ya gotta remember a few things about what its
like growing up watching 'soccer' here in the states. People aren't
brought up in the fanbase bloodline like it is in the UK. But not
everybody chooses their teams because they were winning plenty. Since
most americans cant claim geographic location to supporting a team,
people are drawn, (hopefully) to things or players they like. My pops
grew up a Spurs fan, so i've been an arsenal fan as long as i can
remember lol. I can't speak for the arsenal fans on that side, (and i
think choosing one game in which the supporters walked out is a bit
unfair), but if you didn't start watching arsenal before wenger got
there, then it makes sense that you wouldnt know who managed before
him. Also, americans access to euro football has been incredibly
limited to say the least, most americans dont even think its a real
sport, and its not carried much on tv. only recently has it become more
popular, and still, the coverage is way limited. All the focus on tv is
placed on the big four teams, and even thats a stretch. No offense but
but for an american sports network to use a time slot to show Leeds or
Portsmouth is more than a gamble.
Arsenal fans are the epitome of
rich, new age age, no nothing about the game, believ football was
inveted in 1996, fickle 'supporters on the planet.
Well thats a bit cold, i think. You could easily replace Arsenal with Man u and 1996 with 1999 in that statement.
The reason i say most americans who
choose man u are glory hunters is that futbol in america has been
increasing in popularity very recently, and bringing with it a lot of
Man Utd fans. I cant speak for the English caliber of any fans, but i
know what american glory hunters sure look like.
going to matches doesnt make you a true fan either, imo. Obviously
i cant go to 10+ games a season, the drive from san jose to emirates is
kinda a long one. I suppose i could go watch the san jose earthquakes,
but then i'd have to watch the san jose earthquakes.

aaaaaand Nasri breaks his damn leg in training practice. I don't know what it is in the water over at Emirates, but these guys stay injured. Normally, they wait about 3 games into the season to get a 3 month long injury though. Hopefully this'll mean a permanent first team spot for arshavin though, who i'd much rather have in the midfield than nasri.

ESPN is reporting that he fractured his fibula...That's better than injuring the tibia. I broke my tibia during my sopguy i likere year of high school. It takes ages to heal (according to my doctor at the time, it's the slowest healing bone in your body).
Get the man a hyperbaric chamber, and he'll be good to go in no time.

From Bill Simmons' mail bag:
Q: I am a die-hard soccer fan living abroad and agree with your theory that international soccer could take off in the States. But not everyone listens to your podcasts, so could you please make the same case in one of your columns so everyone can see it? I think it's important. Thanks and cheers from the UK!
-- T.J., Leeds, England
SG: Sure. I'll do it in five short paragraphs and 500 words total. The theory goes like this …
1. Americans enjoy watching the best (fill in any sport). We are elitists. That's why we like the Olympics, that's why we enjoy any finals, that's why we watch Wimbledon and the Masters, that's why we don't care about sports like the WNBA, MLS or arena football as anything other than a niche sport. International soccer plays into this. It's the best of the best. Hell, we even liked "The Best of the Best" even though Eric Roberts was the biggest star in it.
2. The games zoom along: no commercials, no sideline reporters, no corporate tie-ins, no four-hour games like in baseball, no "takes 20 minutes to play the last two" like in the NBA. You can sit down for a soccer game and say, "I'm going to spend the next two hours watching this and then I'm going to do something else." Like watch more TV.
3. Give credit to ESPN for committing air time in non-Cup years to elite international soccer tournaments like the UEFA Cup. I know that's how I started paying more attention. If you like sports, you cannot NOT get caught up in the level of play, the maniacal crowds, the intensity and tension and everything else. It's impossible.
4. Widescreen TVs make it easier to see the field; HD makes it easier to see faces and numbers (and the grass looks green and vibrant); and better camerawork (and also more cameras) make the games more intimate. Now you feel like the players are flopping right onto your living room rug! Just kidding, soccer fans. Seriously, settle down. Jokes.
5. International soccer never took off here for the simple reason that American sports fans had trouble following anything they couldn't attend in person and/or watch on television at their leisure. Now? We're turning into a sofa culture; since it's more expensive to go to games, many of us find it just as rewarding to stay home, save money and watch games on a nice TV. Throw in the Internet, DirecTV, fan blogs and everything else and you really can follow soccer from across the Atlantic.
That's why, over the next decade -- starting with the World Cup in 2010 -- I predict international soccer takes off to a modest degree in America during the '10s. Not to compare everything to "The Godfather," but for America, the NASL was Sonny (exciting, impetuous and ultimately self-destructive), the MLS is Fredo (weak) and international soccer is Michael (the heavy hitter who was lurking all along). That's how this plays out I think. |

Nice article about Tevez. The guy is a baller but has really failed to to perform in the premiership. SAF makes some good points, how many players are they really gonna sign? they've signed robinho, adebayor, santa cruz, and tevez, whom are all first team strikers. But they already had bellamy, evans, caicedo and benjani!! wtf? If man city doesnt at least finish top four, its a waste. I hope that team can mend well together.
Simmons does make some good points about futbol here in the US. for a long time, ive thought the reasons more americans dont get on it is accessibility. Anybody i know who has sat down to watch a few games or played FIFA with me has become a fan. Now that it'll be on espn, and hopefully the premier games in HD, i think it'll definitely start to catch more.

SAF makes some good points about Tevez... however when you spend £30m on Berbatov you gotta take that with a pinch of salt. Once thing you can't fault Tevez for is lack of effort, whereas Berbatov you know within 5 minutes of a game whether he's going to be good or not. If Berbatov doesn't feel like playing well he won't play well – far too tempramental for a top side
The joke going around England at the end of last season was: Q. Why does David Blaine hate Berbatov? A. He's just broke his record for hanging around a the box doing nothing His criticism of Tevez conveniently ignores the fact that Ferguson bought 3 strikers who all play in a similar way and none of them are natural poachers. Hence Owen is an excellent signing for them because he's a totally different type of striker, the sort that Man Utd have been lacking since Van Nistelrooy left. Whether he can stay fit is another question |

Completely agree. Tevez's effort is one of the reasons why many Man U fans wanted him to stay. He was just unlucky to be on a team where the strikers' talents overlaped each other.
I was torn about Tevez leaving. I don't want the team to overpay for players (especially after Berbatov), but I didn't want to see Tevez's work ethic walk out the door either.
Tevez going to Man City is funny though. Instead of playing on a team with 3 similar strikers, he going to a team with 10(?) strikers. If you're a striker and you want more playing time (Tevez wanted more playing time at MU), going to Man City with their plethora of strikers seems odd. But whatever. Money talks.

I know what you mean but Tevez will be assumed to be a regular starer. I see them playing either Tevez/Adebayour as a front 2 with Robinho as a wide player or a 3 man attack with Tevez/Robinho/Adebayour. I see the main guys to loose out being Bellamy and Santa Cruz. The interesting part is who is really signing these players, Hughes? Seems unlikely – Bellamy and Santa Cruz are ex-players of his from Blackburn, but the Hughes, who seems pretty pragmatic, signing Adebayour for £25m seems strange.. think it's a similar situation to Abramovich at Chelsea or Real Madrid, chairman making signings Tevez is a very interesting case, surrounded in controvesy... has he ever been legally registered to play in Enlgand? Is he still owned by a consortium, the whole deal with Man Utd was irregular to say the least. |

There are rumblings about John Terry going to Man City. Anyone have thoughts on that move?
I am amused by the thought of Chelsea's defensive cornerstone being taken away.
