I am surprised there isn't a topic about this place.
I have only heard good things about it, and want to plan a trip there sometime soon hopefully http://www.skigranitepeak.com/ any comments or suggestions are definitely appreciated, thanks! |

I haven't been to GP since January 2008. While GP is the highest "mountain" within a reasonable driving range of where I live (Chicago), it is far enough away that personally I would stay at least one night if I go there.
In general GP is steeper at the top and then flattens out quick. I like how they have designated tree riding there. I can't speak on the park set up, but I've heard they've been pretty good. And while they claim 70+ runs, keep in mind that any little crossover from one run to the next is called a run. It also tends to be pricier than other resorts, but they usually have deals with some including lodging. I've done their buy 2 days get the 3rd day free deal before. |

Peak is a pretty sweet place to go... but like said above it is pricier then the surronding areas. The top is steep and they have a couple cliffs to go off. The bottom is pretty flat but a pretty long ride. They have 3 parks all differnt levels from beginner to advanced. No half pipe but i think they have 40 and 60 footers. Overall a sweet place to go and best deal is to go on tues/thursday nights. tickets are only 15 bucks... Hope that hels

I like GP, I like Indianhead a little more, but its quite a bit further. My midwest mountain of choice is Bohemia, though I havent been there yet. This season Im sure.
GP has some fun steep runs, and Im looking forward to getting back up there, I also havent been there since January 08, but it was fun

Granite Peak is definitely a lot of fun. Some of the widest variety of terrain available in the midwest. Too bad they are doing this...

TOTALLY bogus that they've made 3 runs skiiers only...
are they going to change it back to "board parks" then too so we get our own turf?!
GP is awesome...for Wisconsin. It's massive. Almost every hill is a black diamond though--if the lift goes all the way up. They're hella steep! 3 of the lifts have a drop off half way up... so, there are like 15 different runs you can hit from those spots. But it's way better than DH/Cascade.
This skiiers thing makes me really angry though.

I guess if I did go I would just ride the rest of the hill and then hit the skiers only toward the end of the day. oops didn't see the sign, want my ticket? I was going to leave anyways.

I agree! I'm thinking about going there just to ride those runs and see what happens. They won't be able to catch me in the trees... Maybe they will start a ski patrol reality show based there! |

Is this place comparable to places out West? I have a free ticket that expires on the 24th, and I'm debating whether it's worth checking it out from the Twin Cities (about a 3.5 hour drive) as compared to places that're just 45 minutes to an hour away... especially considering this "skier only" bullshit.

While it is the tallest in WI, that isn't saying much. The most comparable thing to out west would be the lift ticket prices.
It does have fast lifts. Runs typically start steep and then level out quickly. They do have designated tree skiing which is a bonus. Fried cheese curds, too. I didn't venture into the park the few times I went there, but I do know that they usually have at least one run with some good size kickers/booters.
Oh, and don't give much credence to the number of runs they market. They call any little stretch connecting two runs a run itself.
What places are closer to you?

My buddy's are the park crew out there, man do they take care of that park big time. Sick place for park for sure.
The guy there who made those runs skiier only is a dick, I don't care about it, cause I don't ride anything but park, the only part that annoys me is that they think they are ohhh sooo great that skiiers can get their own runs.Â

spent the whole weekend riding there,
Pros:
many parks
big for midwest
good snow
not that busy
cons:
pretty far from chicago, only good for multiple day trips
expensive for midwest
only 1 high speed lift
overall, very good place for a weekend trip from chicago

Gp is a fun place. I went there for a school trip a couple weeks ago and a few other times before that. The 'Skier Only' runs are crazy fun. Towards the end of the day the skier only runs completely clear out.

Since it's further north, its season tends to run later than the other WI resorts. I am seriously thinking about making the trek up there to get in a few more days this season. I can't make it up this week so I'll see how the snow is next week. |

We went to GP last weekend. It was still in decent shape where I went on skis and board. There were some bare patches and places where the snow had collapsed, but not too hard to dodge Mornings were good, afternoons were slush with highs in the mid-50s. It looked like they had a lot of park setup, but I'm not park riding yet.

if your going all the way from chicago. only come for the park. the rest of the hill is trash. and a waste of time. this is my home hill. im 30 minutes out (depending on how fast me and my friends drive
) but if you want to just ride and stuff. go up to the UP. Powderhorn, Indianhead and actually Whitecap is good for cruising. alot of hill there. Whitecap has three "mountains" all thrown together. leads for a sweet exploring day. but really. nothing will EVER compare around here to a place like Utah. i went on spring break and i am going to hate boarding here.
