I go to JMU in Harrisonburg, Massanutten is only 20 minutes away so it's good enough.  I've also gone to Wintergreen.  This year I plan on hitting up Snowshoe a few weekends and heading up to Canada in december.  Wintergreen isn't that much better than Massanutten, just more slopes but some conditions.  Still got a long way to go before winter.

Snowshoe is best in the area i drive 3.5 hours to it from my house in Va atleast 3 or 4 times a year.  Best snow without going to the rockies or up north.  The other half decent place with some cheap rates is Wisp Mtn in marylnd bout 2.5 hrs from my location.

that might just be a rumor.  indoor resorts are mostly overseas like in Japan or the Netherlands.

i know there are plans for an indoor resort in Mississippi and Vegas but the designs are still in the works.

I read about the NJ park in Snowboarder Mag.  I think it is supposed to open in 2010 if I remember correctly.

i normally get a season pass to Massanutten resort since its closer and not as crowded.  i've been to Whitetail for the 1st time last season and liked it a lot.  i will definitely go back when the conditions aren't slush

I'm in richmond and Snowshoe is definately my favorite resort close. I've also been to timerline and that is probably my second fav. i have a pass to wintergreen because that's one of the closest and i usually just go up for a couple hours after school. Nothing here can even compare to Tahoe though=/

i haven't been to Wintergreen for a couple seasons.  i used to go a lot but every season the mountain is getting more crowded which is why i go to Mass instead.  Snowshoe and 7springs are my faves

My schedule normally starts with a early day at snowshoe when it opens then a after that i will do opening as Wisp, canaan, timberline.  keep an eye at opening days at canaan and timberline not best resorts but the first day they open its lifts for free or a dollar atleast it was last year when i went.

Probably not the place to ask but I'm going to ask anyway.
I'm going to try to hit up Snowshoe this winter.  Coming up from Georgia.  Does anybody know of a good place to stay?  Maybe like cabin rentals with hot tubs?  Looking at bringing a party of about 8 max

Intrawest owns the mountain and everything on it, so you'd likely be best off staying at one of the resorts at the top of the mountain. Yo can get units with hot tubs and a few rooms too, but remember it is not cheap.

its definitely not cheap staying at Snowshoe.  for a weekend stay you'll be spending up to $1,500 depending on where you are staying on the mountain.  hope you have deep pockets Big smile

if you go to there site you can find information on any of the spots you can normally get the inn for pretty cheap at the base of the mountain its a hotel but has a pool and couple hot tubs inside.  You can scoop deals on town homes for a weekend or week that house 6 to 8 people for anywhere from 800 to 2000 depending on length and location.  For the area it is defiantly worth it cause nothing like it in the mid east.

The best time to go is during the week since it's cheaper and less crowded by far. I went at the end of January on Sun-Tues and it was $75/night per person including lift tickets at the Inn. It's normally $75/day for lift tickets, so we got the room for free. I did call 2 days before we went, but there was a huge storm that we drove through which was a nightmare since that was the 1st time I'd ever seen snow

I wish Snowshoe would have a friggin webcam so we could see live shots.

Most of the WNC resorts are opening in November, and Cataloochee almost opened on Monday but the weather overnight didn't cooperate.

I would check the hotels right off the turnpike exits.  The closest exit is Donegal and the next closest is Somerset.

They haven't released any info but with the weather we are having i would say not till mid December unless something drastic changes.  If it continues in the freaking 60's it will be a while.

Hi,

I'm in South-West Virginia, where thanks to advances in dentistry, the chromosomes are now more absent than the teeth. I have been advised against Winterplace, anyone been there? Snowshoe is about 3hr away, but if it is worth it, why not? Given how WV is notorious, even here, for its infrastructure issues, are the roads leading to Snowshoe (US219, I64-E) problematic?

Thanks

I thought the roads leading to/from Snowshoe were great, but I went up I77 to I79 from NC. Lots of fun twisties :D

Snowshoes new tentative opening date is the 4 of December but it dosn't look like it is going to get any colder around here for at least a week or so. Hoping that Massanutten is open by the 10 or 11th of December.
