I'm a freeze baby... I need the warmest jacket for snowboarding I can find. I mostly ride on the east coast, and although our mountains stay open till 10pm ... unfortunately it typically drops below 10 degrees after 7pm... but I can't stand bulky jackets though, I like to still look like a girl instead of a puffball...

Buying a Puffy Jacket is not the complete answer. If you are getting cold out on the mountain, especially on the East Coast, you should really look into your layering system.
1) Make that you are wearing a base layer that is a Poly-blend. Cotton absorbs sweat. A poly-blend will wick away the sweat and transfer it to your jacket. 2) Get your self a good mid-layer. Fleece is definitely the way to go. Again, do not wear a cotton sweatshirt. For the East Coast I would get a thicker fleece for warmth. Another alternative to a fleece would be a thin down vest. The down vest will not be as bulky under the arms. 3) For your lower body you can do the exact same thing. Wear a poly-blend thermal and a light fleece pant under your snowboard pants. 4) Pick up a fully fleeced lined beanie. The non-lined beanies allow more of your body heat to escape. Remember if you keep your hands, feet, and head covered you will keep your body heat from escaping. If it is really cold, you will need the down jacket, but down doesn't breathe as well as a non-puffy jacket. |

Do most of the Burton jackets and pants have the jacket-pants interfaces that let them connect together? Reading item descriptions it seems like only a few have it listed as a feature..
I'm looking at Burton and Northface gear, looking for jackets that have powder skirts and pant hookups, but I'm wondering if its really worth picking jackets/pants that do this over jackets/pants that dont. |

Every Burton jacket or pair of pants I've tried from the past few years has had it. Don't know if it's universal, but it's pretty widespread. I highly recommend getting a Sessions jacket. Their pow skirt latches go around any pants belt loops, so you don't have to worry about matching companies. I've owned a few of their jackets and they are clean, comfortable, waterproof, durable, and well valued compared to a lot of other companies. |

i agree that Sessions make some pretty nice jackets. Unfortunately the one i ordered online ended up being a too small but from trying it on and look at the features it was top notch. Take a look at some 686 stuff too. I have 686 pants and jackets and they have a nice snap in feature. |

I've owned two Burton Jackets and they are both under most conditions. I have a three year old ronin jacket and last year's system jacket. Both very warm and breathable. I never have moisture problems. The System Jacket is great at breaking wind, ;) I wear it when riding my motorcycle in sub 40 degree weather, and at 70 mph I don't usually feel much wind chill.

thanks for the suggestions, I'm taking a look at some of those jackets now.
on another topic, im looking at pants and some are listed as shell, some as insulated, and some don't specify. is there a big difference between shell and insulated pants? are shell pants really just a shell? I'm not sure if the pants i have right now are considered insulated or not, but it has a very thin layer of polyester inside. (its torn in various spots so i can see in there =D) so im trying to guage new stuff to what i already have |

If there's an insulation layer it's not considered a shell. The only difference is insulation. I prefer shells since having insulated clothes sucks on hot days (even with open vents), and it's easy enough to throw on a fleece insulating layer underneath. |

Doubt many know how Recco sensors work, since that person would have had to have been buried in an avalanche in-bounds. The sensors are completely passive, so it's really up to whether the resort has the machinery to detect them and whether the people using the machinery are well trained. It's just a nice thing to have.

i have a burton jacket thats a size small. its the first burton jacket i ever got. my regular shirt size for other clothing and jacket is a medium but that small sized burton jacket seems huge on me. is it suppose to be a baggy fit? its also pretty long, like its about 6 inches from my knees and the arm is kinda long....

I've had a Planet Earth jacket and two Burton jackets and I can say they are both great companies. Very waterproof and very breathable. I did tear a hole in my Planet Earth jacket but that was because I snagged a branch. Stupid me.

not sure if i should get a new jacket specific for snowboarding or not. i have a columbia jacket right now and it has a removeable liner and that keeps me super warm. it is kind of bulky though and im wondering if a more snowboarding specific jacket would be more comfortable and still keep me nice and warm

I notice many of the jacket reviews have comments suggesting to buy a size smaller than normal, I'm 6'2" 180lb and would normally get a large here in Australia but not so sure. Bit harder when ordering overseas, and it doesn't sound as though I should work straight off the sizing chart. Any suggestions (brands etc.)? Our season is just about to kick off...yay :)

The one time I was there during that time, it wasn't really wet but super cold. You could get away with 5-10K but I would suggest getting something insulated. I asked PhilWiles and he said it usually doesn't snow around that time either, so even a nice softshell will work just fine.

Great advice Beth. I would also add to #1. Poly-pro is good but its not the best. It absolutely beats cotton. Cotton kills. I would add to get a base layer of poly-pro or preferably merino wool. It doesn't wick as fast polypro. But it has several advantages over the former: natural fiber (not synthetic), antibacterial properties (without the need of silver or other metallic ions), great body temperature management (hot while cold, cold while hot), retains heat while wet (with sweat) so that not wicking as fast isn't that much of a negative against it, and most importantly, merino doesn't stink after use. you know the smell... for the others asking about jacket warmth, it really depends on how cold your body can handle. as others mentioned, there's two main choices: good layering + shell and if that doesn't work, you need to add down (natural) or primaloft (synthetic). |

@ Clee - i dont wanna make a science class outta this.. but the 'actual color' is just going to be a matter of lighting. The orange dye for both jackets is the same, the difference in color that you're seeing is just a matter of how much light is on each jacket for each photo. The model is in a room with brighter, studio lights on him, so the jacket is going to appear a brighter color, whereas the jacket on the left doesnt have as much lighting on it. That said, i would imagine under cloudy, snowy days with less light bouncin around, its more likely to appear like the 'darker' one on the left.
PS - Sick jacket. |

the simple answer is the higher the better. 20K/8K is 20K waterproof rating and 8K breathability. the first number is an indication on how waterproof it is. essentially, you can wear a nylon trashbag and be completely waterproof. but would you want to? hence, the second number indicates how well it breathes. you want your fabric's membrane to evaporate your sweat asap while keeping the moisture outside from entering. A typical person losses so much liters of fluid/moisture an hour during strenous activity. I don't have the numbers on me but they're out there.. wiki. Funny thing is that I've only seen waterproof/breathability numbers on snowboard apparel. I suspect that its just one big marketing ploy to convince you why product A is better than product B. Gore tex (and others like eVent) doesn't even bother putting out numbers because its a vastly superior product. Again, I looked up the numbers once. Then there's Gore Tex regular, 2 layer gore tex, 3 layer gore tex, Gore Tex paclite, 2 layer gore tex pro shell, 3 layer gore tex pro shell (sweet), etc. With that said, I wouldn't recommend buying something with 5/5 or 10/5 rating. |

well i know stupid lighting can make minor difference in color
but theres just too much of a difference there so i was just wondering out of the 2 which is more closer to... im assuming since the color description is burnt orange, i am think its going to be more closer to red then actual orange.. lastly i only asked because i can tell when the picture was taken they used multi lighting or bright light to take the picture, maybe too much light to make the color more bright then actual color... therefore i couldn't really get an idea of the color it could be.. |

What does everyone think of Oakley jackets. In their stores they're having a 50% off sale on all of it and I was thinking about picking up this jacket at $115... yes? no? maybe so?

Im a little confused about the sleeve length of the jackets. Im using the chart to show me where to measure and im coming up with my arm length being around 28 inches. For medium jackets, the sleeve length is 33. Am I not measuring correctly? And if its helpful, Im 5"8, 130ish.

Oakley jackets run HUGE - maybe even bigger than special blend. I got a sick deal on an Oakley crash jacket ($40) it's a large and I swim in it... Will prob end up selling.

I bought the jacket and a zip-hoodie from there. The jackets run. ginormous. Like insanely big. I usually wear an xl to L jacket and had to get the medium size.... and I'm still swimming in it. It's big but just baggy, not cumbersome. I rode all weekend in it (Heavenly then Sierra) and it was fine. The hood took a little getting used to (because it uses a magnet/zipper/snap system) but once I got it working it was great. Warm and dry all day even in heavy heavy snow.
My only gripe about the jacket is that the vents on the arm pits don't have a mesh lining like other jackets. When you unzip the vent, its completely open to your second layer. |
