History:
Spyder began in the kitchen of founder David Jacobs in 1978. Noting that current ski racing sweaters were inadequate to meet expectations, he began his own mail-order business. He derived the name from a comment his son made about how the pants were shaped like spider legs. After a period of two years, popularity grew to the point where Jacobs was making over one-hundred thousand dollars in sales. Hanson, a company producing ski boots, then purchased the company for 18 months before going bankrupt, at which point Jacobs re-attained ownership.
Popularity of the brand has grown ever since. Today, Spider is a sponsor of several teams (including the US team) as well as multiple events. It's product line has diversified to include all types of ski-wear.
In 2004, Spyder was purchased by Apax Partners but was still left to create innovative new products under Jacobs' leadership as CEO. In 2007, David Jacobs' son, Jake, took over as the new CEO of Spyder.
