Jim Says: Salomon has hit a very useful balance of capabilities with the new X-Wing Fury. The Fury uses Salomon's new wood and metal construction for a very solid feel. Yet for all its' strength, it feels more nimble than most other skis with similar widths. Some skiers may want a ski with a lot of power to really blast through the crud and the junk. That's fine for some, but I personally think than many experts might prefer a little easier going ride for the rough and funky snow conditions that we encounter in the off trail. When I skied the Fury, I took it to the top of the mountain and skied some of Mammoths' famous wind pack on some very steep terrain. Of course, I wasn't the first skier up there so it was pretty hacked up and had some fairly deep clumps. With a little ankle roll and an extension of my uphill leg, the Fury just whipped around with an ease that delighted me for such a wide ski. Then as I got lower on the slope, the wind pack was really cut up and close to moguls. The easy maneuverability was obvious. While the bumps tossed me around some, the ski never did. Moving back to the firm groomers the Fury was not the most powerful ski in the 50/50 group yet it held its own very well. I think that Salomon has come pretty close to the ideal mix of characteristics for the 50/50 category (at least as I define it) I skied the 172 and that will be the most popular size especially for relaxed skiers. The easy turning nature of this ski will allow some experts to consider the 180. I think the longer size will accentuate the stability in crud while still being user friendly. I think the 180 would be my own preference.

Salomon binding set ups

Many Salomon skis for '07 are offered either flat or with a plate system. The newest Salomon plates are tailored to the individual ski and enhance grip, dampening, and pressure distribution. Choosing a flat ski allows the skier an option of a softer flex and a lighter set up and to use a binding of their choice. We carry the Wing Fury both ways and suggest the Salomon 912 binding for the flat ski option.
