![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Terrain Use: Powder, Backcountry
Pros: lightweight, Easy to carve, Stable at high speeds, Strong edgehold, Well known brand
Cons: Top sheet scratches
Other Thoughts: I love this board for powder days. It floats well in the deep stuff but isn't shy about groomers either. Surprisingly lightweight for its size.
2/3/2008 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: Lightweight. The base is super fast which means buttery runs on powder and packed powder conditions. Edges hold great. Leg burn is minimal--especially when heel side braking over bumpy snow or moguls. Board width is specced for a size 10 foot which meant little to no heel/toe drag for me. Wide turns and carves are effortless. Rides great for at least two sessions from taking it out of the packaging.
Cons: The back of the board sometimes fishtails, but I am not sure what is causing it (me, stance or board). As a powder board, it's takes a small amount more effort for quicker turns at slower speeds (compared to my shorter freestyle board).
Other Thoughts: Graphics are plain jane. If you want gnarly graphics on your board, look elsewhere. This board is 100% functional. Stance options to place bindings don't really allow twin/unidirectional position.
1/16/2008 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: I don't know how they did it, but I swear Burton worked with Craig Kelly himself on making this board. It is the closest I have come to the surfy feel of my old, tattooed Kelly Air. The nose plows through crud with the right amount of damping and the pressure distribution edges do a great job of cutting into ice. Hop into powder and the board transforms into an extension of your soul surfing chi. Yes, you can euro-carve on this board (hey, neon is making a come back) thanks to the tighter side-cut and slight taper, but that tech also works to pop you in and out of some great, flowing carves. The base is freaking fast, which means you spend less time waddling like a penguin and more time slashing that powder the jiblets missed.
All this combines into highly versatile, responsive, free-riding gun.
Cons: No Craig Kelly pro model. :(
Other Thoughts: Old-school feel with new-school tech. The taper did not effect riding switch. It really loves to float in powder, almost like you have two boards in one. The X is not too stiff compared to other brands I have ridden in the past (like Solomon), but it still take some effort to torque out wheelies. In the middle of the board you can see where they transition from nose flex to tail flex. The board has a nice torsional flex and damping combination to it. I was singing The Soup Dragons all day. Don't be afraid of your freedom!
