Sierra Says: Here at Sierra, we feel the Malolo is the ultimate resort powder board. It is incredible for deep snow conditions, yet still easy to ride when the fresh gets tracked out. A 20mm tapered shape, 2cm setback stance, and NEW S-Rocker design give you all the float you need to embrace Mother Earth's fury. Not overly aggressive, the Malolo is fine for any intermediate or advanced rider looking to add a classic pow stick to their quiver.

Burton Says: The Malolo's shallower taper lets guys like Terje and Nicolas Muller spin off cliffs and kickers, lay it sideways, and blast through stashes with uncompromised flow and precision. Whether it's an epic dump or late day crud, the NEW S-Rocker design equals effortless float that will accelerate you out of even the deepest driving turn.

Sierra says: "With a 20mm taper this Burton Malolo plows through the toughest powder spots, cliff-drops, and tree lines. With such a taper you should size down 2-4 cm from your average board length so you do not get too much board for yourself. It rides groomed runs adequately, but shows its true self when in deep pow. Want a new all-around powder stick? Well the Malolo is just up your alley."
** Only Burton bindings will be compatible with the ICS system on this board**

Burton says: Powder-fueled with a heart for freestyle. Malolo riders thank the heavens that there are people on this planet who honestly hate powder. A true deep-snow surfer with a heart for freestyle, the Malolo shreds the entire mountain, spins off cliffs and kickers, and slashes from stash to stash with uncompromised float and flow precision. While others complain that there's too much snow, Jedi's like Haakon, Nico and DCP are riding a powder-fueled battering ram, hot-lapping the misties 'til their eyes bleed.

"Awesome board for all sorts of conditions, especially powder!" 3/9/2009
Helpful Review?   (2) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2009 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Advanced
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  Durable, lightweight, Easy to carve, Stable at high speeds, Strong edgehold, Great value, Well known brand

Experience:   Just bought this board from Sierra last week...I love it! Rides excellent in the powder, I was just floating all day long. I found it handled the tracked out, bumpy pow bunches better than any other board I have ridden. Usually, when I would ride over small powder bumps I would have to keep my speed a little slower and really deal with a lot of absorbing the shock in my knees. With the malo, I cruised over the bumpy patches, the taper on the board with the wide nose just planes through everything and is super soft and absorbant. I was a little hesitant on which size board I wanted. I ended up going with the 158, and I currently ride a 158 on my regular board. Anyway, I wanted something that would feel a little bigger but wouldn't ride too big. Great choice, the 158 is perfect for floating through powder, carving up groomers, and riding at very fast speeds!

"Deciding on Length?" 9/3/2009
Helpful Review?   (1) Yes    (1) No

  • Name: 2009 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Advanced
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  Short length,
  • Cons:  Short length,

Experience:   I reckon I should provide a review after a month long debate on which length to purchase. Background: 6'2 - 185 lbs - 15+ years riding - NW Cascade conditions. I ended up purchasing the 162 and I've been pretty happy with it. To be honest, the whole point of the board is to shorten your overall length thanks to the small tail and oversized nose. I had to keep telling myself that because taking a 162 out on a powder day seems insane! For me, the perfect size would have been a 164 but if you are on the fence, size down. The board provides a great turning radius in the trees but it's easy to stall out if you drop your speed ... in other words, when it's on plane you can use the tail like a rudder and the nose will plow through anything. Good times, I look forward to dialing it in a little more this winter. Still super skeptical on the new binding system Burton setup ... Unless you have in CRANKED down, it will slip after a while. And the quick adjust ... total joke unless your lift lines are 20 minutes long.

Experience:   As a powder stick, you'll find nothing better. As an all-mtn board, it keeps up with the rest. Slay the groomers, pow, jumps, and hit mach speeds with no worries. I have no problems, no jitters, no damage. I even rode it on east coast ice and it performed!!! Get it, just get it.

"Burton malolo is the best powder board!" 8/30/2008
Helpful Review?   (1) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2009 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Intermediate
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  Durable, lightweight, Easy to carve, Stable at high speeds, Popular model, Strong edgehold, Popular on mountain, Well known brand

Experience:   Graphics are MUCH better this year...the 154 doesn't have pink all over it and look like a girls board like last years. What's so great about the malolo is the large nose allows you to size down. I was riding a 158-161 on powders days and i've been on the 154 malolo for 4 seasons now. The small tail makes it so you can poke through the powder like a hot knife through butter, it carves like your on the groomers even though your in a foot of powder. Plus your back leg DOES NOT BURN since there is less tail to push down. The large nose gives you tons of float. I was shocked at how well the board carved on groomers too...you can get away with this as your only board if you are a free rider...

"Great Board" 11/17/2009
Helpful Review?   (0) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2009 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Intermediate
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  Great in powder,
  • Cons:  None,

Experience:   Mt. Baker just opened up. Epic deep powder days. I've been twice. The first day I took my Capita Scaremaster as I didn't want to scratch up my Malolo. I spent half the day standing on my rear foot, half the day sinking through powder, and half the day walking through waist deep powder (yes, I know what that adds up to.) I didn't hit one rock, so I decided to bust out my Malolo the second day. The difference was insane. I floated through the powder, barely had to lean back, and still stayed stable hauling ass down the groomers. For ~$250, you really can't go wrong with this board if you're riding powder.

"hold up there burton!" 11/10/2009
Helpful Review?   (0) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2010 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Intermediate
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  as everyone says... pow killer, terje and nicolas' backcountry plank, a nose that can't drown in the pow
  • Cons:  priced like its the best board of its class..., every year the graphic gets worse, its a burton.., welcome to the club

Experience:   Okay. I rid this board having ridden last years malolo with before they incorporated s-rocker. I had the same opionions and riding expierience I had with this years. Their are a couple of things I would like to point out though. First off, a bevy of boards exist these days that like the malolo have been designed for the dual use of pow and groomers. For instance, the Forum seeker is a great board and the 2010 model earned one of TWS' prestiges Good Wood awards. If you look at last years model its currently priced at half the money you would spend on the 2010 malolo. If you question its skills check out Blauvelt in Forever and Forum or Against em tearing through the steeps of the Northwest on that thing. Or maybe the Lib-Tech Snow Mullet. With magne traction edges and the float of banana tech you'll have a cheat like expierience on the pow AND the groomers. All I'm saying is, Burton has this massive reach and customer base due to their prevelant size in the industry. Because of this, they can put out a good product and jack up the price to put it in a certain competitive category. When you look at their competitor's boards (usually smaller companies) you are seeing alot of innovative and great designs that are coming from hungry companies, not a company that simply kept up with the industry by coming out with their own version of reverse camber and putting out a board that was in essence designed some years ago. Is the Malolo a great board? Hell yes. Is it the best board in its class? Its Apples and Oranges, but you DO HAVE OPTIONS!

"Fun Pow Board" 11/3/2009
Helpful Review?   (0) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2010 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Advanced
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  Tapered for Increased Float, Set Back,
  • Cons:  Limited usage,

Experience:   The Burton Malolo is a fun little pow board to add to your quiver, between the taper and the set back you'll find lots of float. A fun board for the park rat looking to get his kicks out in the backcountry, you'll find landing switch is easier on the Malolo than some other pow boards out there. Definitely not recommended if your looking for a quiver killer, or a beginner, this board is for advanced riders in the back country.

"Pow Machine!!" 9/22/2009
Helpful Review?   (0) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2010 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Advanced
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  Sick in the Powder!!, Fun in the Chop!!, Great Rebound and Construction!
  • Cons:  A little catchy at times on the Hard Pack.,

Experience:   I rode this board during the big pow days at Squaw last Spring (2009) for a few days and had a blast on it. The board with the new S-Rocker is a bit more powder specific than the Malolos of the past. So if you are afraid of change you better get the 2009 models while they last. The Board is almost hard to sink the nose while riding pow and the camber under the back foot, that was created to get more float. Also gives the board a quick snappy rebound in even light powder. The base is fast and the EST is the bomb. I rode switch a bit and it definitely took a bit to get used. The board is quite fun in bumps and end of the day chop. I look forward to the next time I can get on the S-Rocker in the pow, very fun!

"great powder board" 9/3/2009
Helpful Review?   (0) Yes    (0) No

  • Name: 2009 Burton Malolo
  • Skill:  Intermediate
  • Use:  Boxes,Groomers,Jumps,Powder,Rails
  • Pros:  effortless float, capable on powder and groomed trails, established brand
  • Cons:  more costly than other brands,

Experience:   This is an excellent freeride board for any occasion. At first I was a little hesitant about the tapered design, but believe the reviews when they say that this board makes it extremely easy to carve. You can turn instantly. The wider nose lets this board float in powder without much effort.. no back leg strain at all after an entire day of riding. Very stable and very responsive at high speeds. On groomed runs, this board also handles well and holds an edge even on the poorest snow conditions (aka ice). Something to note though is that because this board is directional, riding switch was very very difficult (for me at least).. so as a park board, I usually use another twin board.

Experience:   This is a great snowboard on those knee to waist deep pow days at a resort. Unfortunately, it won't handle anything else on the mountain quite as well. I would only take it riding on good pow days. Still a great board. It definitely does what it is supposed to.

Experience:   Just picked this up from sierra. Im super excited to take this baby out for a pow day. The graphics are a little weird, but I just got it for the tech. I had a little trouble setting up. The screw inserts dont slide very well in the channel so it took a while. Other then that I love the channel system. I wear a size 13 boot and this board is the perfect width, so if you have bigger feet theres no problem here.

Experience:   The Burton Malolo is a mush have if you plan on riding deep powder...especially during a storm. The malolo floats for you, turns for you and charges through crud for you. Therefore, when it is stormy and nasty outside, all you need to worry about is seeing in front of you and the malolo will ride for you.

Experience:   Had a few runs last season on this board when i switched with my buddy for the day and I noticed a huge difference between the tapered shape and a non-tapered shape through the cruddy or bumpy snow. This board floated like a boat and made it hard to nose-dive in any pow and on groomers it was not too bad. Had a great time!

  • Pros:  Stable at high speeds, Stiff, Well known brand
  • Cons:  Sluggish

Experience:   Bought this board from Sierra about two weeks ago; my main board is a Custom X. I'm in Utah right now, 20" fell the day before I landed; have used board 2 days on mountain. Expecting more fresh snow than what there really is, I set the bindings back pretty far and felt like a newb, having so much trouble turning. Adjusted bindings 1" further up-- improved turning, but still not nearly as nimble as the Custom X. Found a few untouched powder stashes yesterday, nose seemed to float fine. Had no problem with speed on smoother groomers. All in all, needs more testing and getting used to. Will revise review after two more days here...

Experience:   This is a great board. Doesn't take away all back leg burn but it's amazing what this thing can do in the powder. What's most impressive is that with the stance set back you can still carve like your regular board. On my other boards I would set the stance back but notice a noticeable drop in carving ability. The back edge is decreased due to a set back stance and your edge hold on the rear is less and a little squirly. This thing somehow eliminates that and ride perfect. I hope that mad sense.
